Become a volunteer
In 2007, 5 rail enthusiasts came together to form the society Trains & Traction. Their plan was to take over the operation of the Train des Mouettes with the support of the Département de la Charente Maritime who owned the line, allowing them to preserve the know-how and special atmosphere linked to the railway’s heritage.
In order to reopen the railway in time for the 2008 season, they came up with an original method of recruitment: They invited volunteers from other societies across France to join them. By gathering together a wealth of experience in this way, the society created a special atmosphere where knowledge is shared and passed on to new volunteers.
By the end of 2020, more than 120 volunteers had joined the society.
So what about you? Are you newly retired? Do you have time on your hands? Are you looking for a new, exciting experience? Maybe you’d like to drive an engine, help restore our historic rolling stock or become a guard or train manager on the “Train des Mouettes”
Train & Traction would love to hear from you, whether you live in Charente-Maritime or further afield. All are welcome to volunteer with us!
No rail experience needed – Our old hands and railway buffs will offer you all the training you need.
Guard and train manager
Our train manager travels with the passengers and is responsible for their safety. They provide a commentary of the journey. The guard supports the train manager in welcoming passengers, checking tickets and keeping everyone safe.
Steam or diesel engine driver
If are already an experienced train driver or if you wish to become one, we can offer you driving courses on the footplate of our locomotives.
Volunteering in the workshop
Whether you have a special skill or not, you are welcome to join the team that meets every Tuesday to maintain and repair our rolling stock. You may even get to help build some new rail equipment. We can promise you a friendly atmosphere, a chance to eat your packed lunch together and cake to end the day.
